Feb. 2-8

As I drove to Herington Thursday I noticed a farmer discing his ground. I thought if my garden was tilled I would have planted some radishes and onions. I can remember in February 1947, when my husband Melvin and I lived in Wichita we planted most of our garden. It never froze. My tulips and daffodils are coming up. There are a few dandelions blooming in my yard.

It was a shock to hear Friday that Glenn Heitfield had a heart attack while driving north of Lost Springs to Herington. He died at the place of the accident. He was 57 years old.

Bob and Irma Reznicek and Monty and Sarah Stuchlik attended visitation for Glenn Tuesday evening at Herington.

Larry Rudolph visited his sister, Mary Helen Black Tuesday afternoon at Herington.

Ramona and Don Beisel of Tampa visited their mom, Frances Stuchlik Saturday afternoon. They all went to St. John's Catholic Church that evening at Herington.

My cousin, Dorothy Claussen of Alma called Monday and told me it was cold there with snow on the ground. I told her I washed clothes and had taken them off the line. Wish we had some moisture so we could burn our trash.

Alex Stuchlik told me his band played for the Kansas Flying Farmers at Kingfisher Steakhouse and Lounge Saturday at Marion.

Max Delgado of Paradise, Utah, wrote me that his mother, Violet (Peterson) Delgado died Nov. 9. She went through heart surgery OK, but died during recovery. Violet would have been 91 years old Nov. 19. Violet and I were Lost Springs High School classmates and graduated in 1933. We were close friends. She has two first cousins in the area, Selma Ingram of Lost Springs and Dale Carlson of Herington.

Carol Makovec visited Saturday afternoon with her mother, Irma Reznicek.

Frances Stuchlik told me her son, Bill Stuchlik of Rogers, Ark., had surgery.

Junior and Jeanetta Hanschu went Saturday to Valley Center to watch their grandsons, Jakob and Jorge Hanschu wrestle. They both did a good job and Jakob took first place.

Fred Utech accompanied Junior Hanschu to Marion Wednesday to attend John Deere Day.

Jan. 26-Feb. 1

Junior and Jeanetta Hanschu, Fred and Marguerite Utech, Jeff and Jennifer Braden and Joshua of Windom, Neil and Jolene Abrecht, Kallie and Morgan of Salina, Jayson and Jan Hanschu, Jakob, Jorge, and Jaxxon and Vince and Anne Driver, all of Hillsboro met Sunday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church at Salina for a pancake feed. After the feed they went to Neil and Jolene's home to celebrate the birthdays of Jan, Jolene, and Junior. They opened gifts and ate cake and ice cream.

Oaklan and Tia Jenkins stayed Saturday night with their grandmother, Selma Ingram.

I had at least one-half inch of rain and a little hail Saturday night. I can't remember a January in my 90 years that has been so warm, and yes, dry. I was tempted to plant some garden. Some of my elm trees still have leaves. I saw a couple dandelions blooming in my yard.

Larry Rudolph was here Friday evening to feed my cattle. He then went to visit his sister, Karen and Mike Walsh and Renee.

Carl Makovec picked up her mother, Irma Reznicek Sunday afternoon and they went to the Mike Stika home where Angie was having a home party.

Jim and Tina Novak and daughter, Chelsea of Tampa visited Monday night with his parents, Bill and Dollye Novak.

The Lost Springs American Legion Auxiliary meeting was held Monday afternoon at the home of Dollye Novak. After the formal opening, minutes were read and treasurer's report was given.

Dollye read a letter from one of our members, Delores Henke of Emporia and Evelyn Strecker read a letter from Marlene Friesenthal, Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center representative.

Communications were read and discussed. We decided to send $30 to COVAMC for miscellaneous items. President Strecker announced the district convention will be held April 21-22 at Emporia. Report forms are being completed and returned to district chairman.

Mervin and Leona Denies visited Sunday evening with Gerald and Marlene Riffel of Navarre.

Jan. 18-24

Steve Katz and Ryan Makovec went Friday to Lawrence. They stayed overnight with Barbie Katz. Charles and Lori Smithhart of Hillsboro joined them Saturday and all attended the KU basketball game. After the game, Ryan went to Hutchinson, Smithharts returned to Hillsboro, and Steve stayed overnight with Barbie. Adele Katz and her mother, Selma Ingram picked up Steve Sunday near Emporia.

Larry and Susan Stuchlik of Lehigh, Ruby Scharping of Wichita, and Joe Holub of Haysville visited Saturday afternoon with Frances Stuchlik. Ruby and Joe stayed overnight. Monty and Sarah Stuchlik joined Ruby, Joe, and Frances Sunday for dinner.

I received a letter from my sister, Victoria Zell of Shelby, Mont. She said they experienced a light earthquake that took place 26 miles from Shelby. It rearranged the pictures on her walls.

Jess Brunner of rural Tampa had a cow Jan. 17 give birth to four calves. Two were premature, only one lived.

Robert and Debbie Burns' son, Luke Thomas was baptized Sunday at St. Francis Assisi Catholic Church at Wichita. Those who attended the baptism and snacks at the Burns home were Alex and Jean Stuchlik, Chris and Melissa Stuchlik, Gary and JoAnn Stuchlik, Derek, Amanda, Zachary, Nicholas, Maria, and Abigail of Pilsen, Sarah, Therese, Joshua, Michael, and Peter Stuchlik of Wichita.
