Lowell Gardner

Lowell "Buzzy" Gardner, 65, of Herington, died June 14, 2004, at Herington Municipal Hospital.

Born July 8, 1938, in Garden City, he was the son of Forrest and Edith (Liggett) Gardner.

He graduated from Herington High School with the class of 1956 and served in the Army National Guard.

He was a retired conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad. He began working with the Rock Island Railroad, then the Southern Pacific, Cotton Belt Division. He was a member of Herington United Methodist Church, Kansas Lodge #307, A.F.&A.M., Kansas Chapter #73, R.A.M., Herington Commandery #53, K.T., and Esther Chapter #96, Order of Eastern Star, all of Herington. He also was a member of the ISIS Shrine of Salina and the United Transportation Union.

On March 26, 1995, he married Diana L. VanOs Large at Salina.

He was preceded in death by his father, maternal grandparents, and uncle.

Survivors include his wife, Diana; mother, Edith Gardner of Herington; three stepdaughters, Becky Brinkley of Overland Park, Meloney Galloway of Augusta, and Amanda Bhattachan of Lawrence; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Saturday morning at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home & Crematory, Herington, with the Rev. Ed Thompson officiating.

A memorial fund has been established in his name with the Shriners Children's Hospitals.
