Makovec selected for Girls State

Shaina Makovec of Tampa has been chosen by Unit 372 Moffitt-Crandall American Legion Auxiliary to attend the 62nd annual Sunflower Girls State, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.

This year's session is June 6-11 on the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence.

Makovec will join approximately 575 other young women who have just completed their junior year of high school.

Participants learn about Kansas government by "doing." Beginning at the city level, and advancing to county and state levels, girls register to vote, file nomination papers, conduct political campaigns, and make speeches.

During the week, speakers on government at the various levels will share their expertise with the girls.

Speakers include Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh; Ruth Dirreen, department president of the American Legion Auxiliary; and other state, county, and city officials.

The girls also will have the opportunity to ask questions about these individuals' government responsibilities.
