Man injured in U.S.-56/77 accident years ago

A man from Howard was seriously injured Dec. 1 when the van he was riding in was struck by a semi-tractor trailer.

The accident occurred at 4:07 p.m. at U.S.-56/77 and K-150 intersection.

A 1997 GMC van driven by Justin W. Claycamp, 19, Howard, was southbound on U.S.-77 when it struck a 1998 Kenworth semi-tractor trailer driven by Christopher L. Griffith, 25, Kearney, Neb.

The semi was northbound on U.S.-77 and was attempting to turn west onto U.S.-56 when it was struck by the van.

The occupants in the van had to be extricated by Marion County EMS personnel.

The driver of the van was not seriously injured and was transported to St. Luke Hospital where he was treated and released.

By 4:45 p.m., a Lifeteam helicopter landed on U.S.-77 north of the crash scene to airlift the injured passenger, Bill G. Claycamp, 53, of Howard, to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

County undersheriff Randal Brazil said the passenger sustained a broken pelvis and was expected to recover.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

The van was registered to Baldridge Electric of Wichita. The semi-tractor was registered to Lammer Truck, Inc. of Pleasanton, Neb.
