Marble and Granite finishes tied for first

Marion Marble and Granite 10-and-under softball team won three of four games this past week to finish the season 9-2.

The team played two games June 28, one of them completed an earlier game called for lightning.

The team suffered its second loss of the season in the completed game, losing to Marion Body.

Pitcher Chelsea Voth stuck out nine girls in six and one-third innings, and along with Cara Martin belted five hits, but it wasn't enough as the team fell 16-15.

The second game of the night against Marion Body proved better for Marble and Granite.

Voth was at it again, this time striking out eight in an 11-4, complete game victory.

Five girls, Voth, Erin Meierhoff, Anne Jirak, Annie Whitaker, and Kelli Hess, led the team with three hits each.

Marble and Granite then took a 13-6 victory against Chase County.

Jirak struck out three batters, while Voth recorded two strikeouts.

Jirak and Voth also led the team with three hits, while Jirak and Balee Shiplet both knocked a double.

In the final game of the season Friday the team used a dramatic come-from-behind victory to defeat Hillsboro Vogts.

Trailing 5-3 in the final inning, Meierhoff nailed a one-out single. Jirak then hit a double, scoring Meierhoff and cutting the lead to one.

After a strike out, Whitaker singled home Jirak to tie the score. Samantha Eickleberry ended the regular season on a good note, singling home Jirak for the winning run.

The victory gave the girls a 9-2 record, and a share of first place in the league.

The team currently is participating in the league tournament this week.
