Marie Land

Marie Land, 73, of Florence, died Oct. 13, 2006, in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Born April 25, 1933, at Marion, she was the daughter of Harold and Mildred (Osbourn) Johnston. She grew up and attended schools in Marion.

Marie married Leroy Cox in Marion, where the couple made their home.

Her first job was at Westside Café in Florence when she was 15 years old. In 1983, she moved to Eureka where she worked as a waitress at the City Cafe. She moved to Florence in 1991 and worked at Town and Country Café. She also had worked at Johnson's Truck Stop Café and was a housekeeper.

She was a member of Florence United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant brothers, and two sisters, Vera Osgood and Linda Hamm.

Survivors included companion Leroy Cox of Florence; four daughters, Sandy Riggs of Newton, Margaret Burcky of Marion, Ethel Shelburn of Eureka, and Rose Clark of Charlie, Texas; three brothers, Dale Johnson and Wayne Johnston of Marion, and Les Johnston of San Antonio, Texas; three sisters, Shirley Cardin of Florence, Wanda Waring of Pine Bluff, Ark., and Barbara Craney of Topeka; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Oct. 18 at Florence United Methodist Church with Pastor Bethann Black officiating. Interment was at Hillcrest Cemetery, Florence.

Memorial contributions have been established with the American Heart Association and the church.
