Marina development at reservoir will be explored

Commissioner Dan Holub reported Monday to the commission that he had attended an open house at Fort Riley and talked with representatives of Milford Lake.

A marina and camp sites are privately owned and operated at Milford, Holub said, and have been there for 25 years. The private business rents the federal property.

"This is an example of private business on government property," Holub said.

He said he would check with Terry Holt at Marion Reservoir regarding the possibility of promoting a similar project.

In other business:

— Commission chairman Randy Dallke reported a metal building could be purchased for less than $3,000 from GMLS of Peabody but county employees would need to pick up the materials and erect the structure.

The building will be placed behind the county health department for storage.

If the building is ordered yet this month, the county will save 10 percent, Dallke said.

Condensation issues will be resolved with proper ventilation.

— Dan Hall of BG Consultants of Manhattan recently inspected the health department building and determined there were cosmetic issues but no structural concerns as long as interior walls are not moved.

A new staircase and elevator would need to be installed. The existing staircase can be used as an emergency exit.

— Planning and zoning director Bobbi Strait reported the county planning commission would like to proceed with new zoning maps. She will obtain cost estimates and will work it into next year's budget.

— Strait also reported that the planning commission recommended a conditional use permit be approved for a salvage operation owned by Daniel Franz, located north of Durham. The property is limited to owner and family's personal use for junk vehicles and cannot exceed 20 vehicles.

— The commission approved SWAT training for two sheriff's deputies at a cost of $750 each. The training will be provided in May be Harvey County Sheriff's Department.

— No construction and demolition waste will be accepted at the transfer station for free during cleanup weeks. Transfer station manager Rollin Schmidt asked for a clarification of what should and should not be accepted.

Cleanup dates have been set. They are: Marion, April 9-13; Peabody, April 16-21; Hillsboro, April 23-27; Burns, April 27-May 5; Florence, May 7-12; Lehigh, May 11-22; Durham, May 14-19; Ramona, May 22; Lincolnville, June 2-4; and Goessel, June 14-20.

The next commission meeting is at 9 a.m. Friday in the courthouse. There will be no meeting Monday.
