Marion FFA hosts poultry event

Marion-Florence FFA chapter hosted the South Central District FFA poultry career development event Feb. 15 at Marion High School gymnasium.

More than 100 students on 11 teams from the south central district competed.

The event was officiated and coordinated by Dr. Scott Beyer, poultry specialist from Kansas State University.

Participants in the event were required to evaluate two classes of chickens, check for exterior defects in eggs, use a candling light to examine the interior of eggs for defects, identify various cuts of chicken, place a carcass class, grade a class of eggs, take a written test, and complete a team problem-solving activity.

Hank Collett competed from Marion.

FFA members from Marion also served as group leaders, helped with setup for the contest, and supervised the entomology contest event, which occurred at the same time.
