Marion is a gem

Marion has a lot to offer. If you don't think so, try showing a newcomer around town. The other day I had the opportunity to show a prospective new resident the lay of the land.

We drove around town and I pointed out the schools, library, hospital, stadium, baseball/softball complex, swimming pool, and the downtown area.

I told about boating, fishing, and other water sports available at both lakes. We drove by the city building, Elgin Apartments, and the courthouse. Main Street was bustling with activity. Kids were playing in Central Park. It looked like "Small-Town America."

I didn't want this person to think we're just a sleepy little town where people complain about "nothing to do." I told him about Chingawassa Days and the various first-class headline acts that have performed in Central Park. I mentioned Art in the Park and Old Settlers' Day, when thousands of people fill the town and park on two September Saturdays.

Since this person is sports-oriented, I mentioned the Mid-America Youth Basketball tournament had occurred over the weekend and the Cal Ripken 12-and-under state tournament of champions that will be held here in July.

We talked about summer ball programs, swim team, soccer, and golfing.

He was impressed, saying it seemed like a lot going on for a small town. He's right. Marion does have much to offer and there is a lot going on. Remember that the next time you find yourself complaining about "nothing to do in Marion." Take another look — think like a newcomer — and you'll realize Marion is a gem.
