Marion man dies in one-car rollover accident

One person died and another was severely injured Friday afternoon in a one-car accident west of Peabody.

Shawn Eric Hayes, 18, 403 S. Third Street, Marion, was killed in a one-car rollover on 60th Road.

According to Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Jim Philpott, Hayes was driving a 1993 Buick Century, owned by Bill Freeby, 311 N. Locust Street, Marion, eastbound on 60th when he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle entered a ditch twice before it rolled and stopped in a field.

Jennifer Marie Verbic, 20, 311 N. Locust Street, Marion, was a passenger in the vehicle.

Midwest Lifeteam Air Ambulance transported Hayes to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, where later died.

Peabody EMS transported Verbic to Wesley Medical Center. The extent of her injuries and condition were not known at press time but they were no life-threatening.

Philpott reported that Verbic was wearing a seat belt and Hayes was not.
