Marion Marble team loses two

Marion Marble & Granite nine- and 10-year-old girls' team had a tough week, losing to Webster Auto Service and Rod's Tire, Hillsboro.

In the game June 8 against Webster Auto Service, Chelsea Voth gave a solid effort, striking out five batters in three innings. Danae Bina came in to give Voth a rest and had three strike-outs in two innings.

Catchers Elizabeth Goentzel and JayDee Schafers guarded home plate.

The girls had a scoreless first inning but Balee Shiplet, Goentzel, and Monica Spachek put up three runs in the second inning.

Erin Meierhoff and Mattie Hiebert each added a run in the third inning.

Following another scoreless inning, Meierhoff and Schafers added two runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking the lead.

Webster Auto girls came back with two great hits in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs and taking the win by one run, 7-8.

Marion Marble & Granite girls hosted Rod's Tire team from Hillsboro Wednesday evening.

They came up against a fast pitcher and remained scoreless until the third inning when Meierhoff, Hiebert, Goentzel, Rebecca Williams, and Schafers each scored one run.

That was all the Marion girls had, and Hillsboro recorded the win at 5-19.

"We had a few fielding errors that would have changed the score," said coach Chris Meierhoff. "We just needed to hit the ball hard and get on base. "We're a young team and still learning but we are getting better," he added.

Marion Marble & Granite will travel to Hillsboro Friday for a rematch against Rod's Tire.
