Marion meats teams are second, third, fifth

Members of Marion/Florence FFA competed Nov. 18 at the South Central District FFA Meat Evaluation Career Development Event in Arkansas City.

Teams from Marion placed second, third, and fifth in the Greenhand division of the contest.

Individually, Roxann Ross placed second, Alan Overton was sixth, Mark Kukuk was seventh, Derek Riggs was eighth, Brad Klenda was ninth, and Gabe Moore placed 10th.

Team members on the second-place team were Ross, Klenda, and Frankie Clark.

Third place team members were Kukuk, Overton, Riggs, and Seth Banning.

Team members on the fifth-place team were Moore, Jayme Linder, and Jason Richmond.

Alycia Pontious also competed from Marion in the A-team division.

Contest participants were required to identify 30 retail cuts of meat from beef, pork, and lamb species.

Contestants also had to place eight classes of primal cuts and/or carcasses as well as answer questions on two of the placings.

They also evaluated beef carcasses to determine a yield grade and a quality grade for 10 of each.
