Marion Police Department: Lightning strikes, damages tree

A Marion Police officer witnessed a lightning strike May 30 in the 300 block of Elm Street that resulted in tree debris in yards and the street. The officer checked the welfare of residents, notified city crews of power outage and street blockage, and contacted the telephone company about downed lines.

May 19: Vehicle identification inspections were made. An officer attended training in Wichita. A stranded motorist received assistance. Travel directions were given to a motorist. A possible stolen vehicle was reported. A Marion County Sheriff's deputy received assistance with an intoxicated subject. A vehicle was stopped and checked in Central Park. Businesses were checked.

May 20: A wild animal was disposed. A complaint of a dog running at-large was filed. A warning was issued for inoperable taillights. A citation was issued for loud music from a vehicle. An underage drinking complaint was investigated. Businesses were checked.

May 21: Traffic control at Fifth and Main streets was provided for an ambulance and rescue vehicle. A wild animal in the 200 block of South Thorp Street was removed and disposed. A follow-up investigation was conducted regarding a report of underage drinking.

May 22: A junk vehicle complaint was investigated. Businesses were checked.

May 23: An ambulance crew received assistance with a run in the 500 block of South Freeborn Street. A possible scam to a local business was investigated. An unauthorized use of a financial card at a local business was investigated.

May 24: A follow-up investigation was conducted regarding the use of an unauthorized financial card; it was determined the user was authorized by the owner. An investigation was conducted regarding forged checks that were presented to a local business. A motorist received assistance with travel directions.

May 25: Officers attended a meeting. Social and Rehabilitative Services received assistance at a residence regarding firearms. Officers were at firearms range for training. Response was given to a one-vehicle roll-over until a sheriff's deputy arrived.

May 26: A subject met with an officer regarding a harassment complaint. Vehicle identification number inspections were conducted. A stranded motorist received assistance. Warnings were issued for no headlights, no taillights, and illegal parking.

May 27: An ambulance crew received assistance on a run. An officer met with juveniles regarding swimming in fountains at Central Park. A subject met with an officer regarding a parking complaint. Three dogs running at-large were picked up in the Main and Thorp streets area. Response was given to an activated business alarm; everything was OK. A second response was given to the same business alarm; everything was OK. A possible gun shot was reported in the area of South Third Street.

May 28: An ambulance crew received assistance on a run. Response was given to an activated business alarm; everything was OK.

May 29: An officer met with a subject regarding a battery case. Two junk vehicle letters were served. A warning was issued to subject for riding a skateboard in the area of South Third Street. A non-injury, hit-and-run accident that involved a natural gas meter was investigated in the 300 block of South Lincoln Street. Response was given to a disturbance that involved a foster child in the 400 block of Santa Fe Street. Statements were taken from witnesses following a fight between two females at Casey's General Store, 1020 E. Main Street.

May 30: Traffic was diverted from Main and Thorp for a stranded motorist. A weather watch was conducted by officers. Stolen property was recovered; the property was stolen in another jurisdiction. Backup was provided to a sheriff's deputy during a domestic dispute in the 800 block of South Coble Street; one subject was arrested for disorderly conduct. An officer responded to a report of a suicidal subject in the 400 block of North Locust; the subject was not suicidal and found another residence to stay.

May 31: An outside agency met with an officer regarding a theft recovery. A funeral escort was provided. Non-injury accidents were investigated in the 600 block of East Main Street and in a parking lot in the 200 block of North Eisenhower Drive. A stranded motorist received assistance. A civil standby was conducted.

Thursday: A report of criminal damage to property was investigated in the 1100 block of Nickerson Street. A report of gunshots in the South Cedar area was determined to be fireworks. Suspicious subjects who were walking in an alley north of Santa Fe Street were stopped.

Officers drove 2,025 miles, and issued one citation, five warning citations, and made two arrests.
