Marion wrestlers hold on for third at Hesston

Sports reporter

At full strength, the Marion-Florence/Peabody-Burns wrestling team is pretty good.

The Warriors won both matches Thursday at the Burlington double dual, and then placed eight wrestlers Saturday at the Hesston invitational.

Although none of the wrestlers took first, the team still finished third out of 17.

Twins Cody and Dillon Wildin, who did not wrestle at the Smoky Valley opening meet, were a combined 2-1 at Burlington, and each took second place at Hesston.

Junior Adam Regnier continued to be one of Marion's hottest wrestlers, improving to 7-0 after victories at Burlington and the first round at Hesston.

He ended up in third place in the 130-pound division.

Regnier, who began wrestling in seventh grade, is starting to feel more comfortable on the mat after attending a summer camp once a week in Emporia.

"It's benefited me a lot," he said. "I'm more comfortable. It comes to me much easier now."

Regnier and the Wildins weren't the only ones with some success this past week.

Derek Riggs wrestling at 215 took second place, and senior Charlie Holub was third at 145.

Andy Shipman (119), Tylor Neil (140), and Hector Cardenas (160) each placed fourth in their weight classes.

Hank Collett, who wrestled his first three matches of the season at 160, and lost two closes matches at 152 after that, notched his first victory of the season at Hesston.

"It was nice to get that monkey off my back. I'm definitely more comfortable wrestling at 152," Collett said after his first victory. "1-5's not great. But it's better than 0-6."

Head coach Chad Adkins was impressed with the week his team had after going 0-3 at Smoky Valley.

Andy Shipman, a freshman, has caught Adkins' eye early on.

Shipman won his only match at Burlington, and was fourth in the 119-pound class at Hesston.

"He's been very dedicated," Adkins said. "He's lost some weight. That's hard to do."

Overall Adkins likes what his team can do when fully healthy. He also knows that won't always be the case, and since the team isn't deep at every weight class, the wrestlers always have to be at the top of their game.

"You can't take a night off," Adkins said.

The Warriors will be in action Thursday when they compete at the Minneapolis dual.
