MCSEC ELP robotics team earns second

Students in Marion County Special Education Cooperative Extended Learning Program used creative problem solving April 8 to earn a second place trophy in "line-follow tag" at the Kansas Robotics League (KRL) tournament.

The tournament was held in conjunction with Kansas State University's engineering open house in Manhattan.

Line-follow tag was a new event in which students used light sensors to follow a black line on the floor as their robots chased the KRL robot.

The Marion Wildcat team of Derek Stuchlik, Jordan Laurin, and Colby Meier competed well at the event which included more than 120 teams from 55 schools in Kansas and Nebraska.

Competition was close in the maze event where the Peabody Tomahawks team of Dylan Jones and Trevor Foth sat in second place until the end when they were pushed back to fourth by 3/10s of a second.

In capture-the-flag, Stuchlik, Laurin, and Meier won every heat until the final round, when the bumper on their robot broke. The event was double elimination and they still had a chance to win, but were unable to go on to the finals.

The Hillsboro Trojans team performed admirably in all events.
