Members, friends attend annual Riggs family reunion

Forty-five members and friends of the J.D. Riggs family met July 29 at the Florence Senior Center, Florence, in celebration of the 79th annual Riggs reunion.

A basket dinner followed a group picture, the doxology by Dale Riggs and Lela Heacock, and the invocation by Calvin Schmidt.

During the business meeting, led by president Dianne Dewey, each person introduced themselves and their line of ancestry.

First time attendees were Vickey Frances and Suzy Roe.

The oldest person in attendance was 90-year-old Loren Cox of Newton. Ainsley Charest, two-year-old daughter of Aaron and Ashley (Howard) Charest, was the youngest. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Riggs of Amarillo, Texas, received the dual award for coming the farthest distance and being the only one attending still carrying the Riggs name.

It was decided to retain the current slate of officers.

Ross and Alberta Sampson and Sarah Sampson, Haysville; Don and Sharon Kind, Salina; Loren and Mildred Cox, Newton; Jim and Wanda Howard, Derby; Dan Howard, Goddard; Ken and Vickey Frances, Overland Park.

Cleda Cox and Ron and Fern Goodwin, Burns; Reva Goodwin, Randall and Heidi Schmidt, and Calvin and Dawna Schmidt, Moundridge; Carson, Cortney, Caleb, and Carter Cox and Ernie and Ruby Herrick, Emporia.

Jimmie and Betty Beltz, Hutchinson; Todd Smith, Nickerson; Ashley and Ainsey Charest, Topeka.

Three guests, Judy Albrecht, Betty Inlow, and Cecilia Gayle were additional afternoon visitors.

The 80th annual Riggs reunion will be July 26-27, 2008.
