Memorial shelter house planned at Central Park

A new shelter house is being planned at Marion Central Park in memory of a Marion native.

The family of Mark Applegate has donated nearly $20,000 to the City of Marion for the shelter house which is planned to be located in the northeast part of the park, just south of the horseshoe pits. The location was determined by city officials because that area is not used during Art in the Park, Chingawassa Days, or Old Settlers' Day.

The 20x24-foot shelter will be located in an area that will allow wheelchair access. The city will pay for a sidewalk from the park driveway to the shelter house. Four picnic tables and benches also will be located in the shelter and paid by the city.

A proposal from Hett Construction will be reviewed for approval Monday by Marion City Council for the structure. The proposal indicates that the shelter house will be built on a concrete foundation with support columns similar to limestone, and the roof will be composition shingles.

The cost of the building is $19,820.
