Meyer's Malarkey

Those who promote voting by suggesting, "I don't care how you vote, just vote" are wrong. Each person who votes should be well informed on the issues.

The big issue in Marion County this fall is whether to allow selling liquor by the drink. This county is one of the few which doesn't allow it. Marion is a "dry" county surrounded by Chase, Dickinson, McPherson, Harvey, and Butler which allow liquor to be sold by the drink.

Marion County continues to insist that a person must belong to a club in order to purchase a drink.

It's an ostrich mentality.

Some Sundays Joan and I drive to McPherson or Newton to enjoy dinner at Applebee's. Their menu is full of interesting choices.

At Hillsboro the largest collection of liquor tax in the county comes at a so-called private club. Marion has two such clubs and a well-run liquor store. At Burns a highly successful restaurant has a private club license, but can't dispense drinks to the general public. Coneburg Inn, Peabody, has a similar situation.

Marion County voters should pull their heads out of the sand and vote intelligently on this issue in November.
