MHS athletes accept awards at banquet

On the final night of athletics for the 2007-08 school year, $1,500 in scholarships were awarded to deserving Marion High School athletes.

Four separate awards were given out during the night as well. The most anticipated of all were the Most Outstanding Athlete of the Year award. Only seniors who played at least two sports were eligible.

Erin Carr was given the female award and Jason Hett received the male award.

Marion Kiwanis Club awarded two scholarships as well. Travis Hett and Erin Richmond won the Most Inspirational Award, and Danielle Cope and John Barr III were winners of the Leadership Award.

Several scholarships for five sports were awarded as well. MHS activities director Tod Gordon said the idea is to have a scholarship awarded to an athletes from each sport the school offers.

Senior scholarship winners were:

Leroy Drier scholarship - Erin Carr, $500.

Rex Wilson track scholarship - Danielle Cope and Daniel Goentzel, $250 each.

Ed Frickey football scholarship - Jason Hett, $250.

Marion Ogden boys' basketball scholarship - Travis Hett, $250.

Jerry Smith girls' basketball scholarship - Erin Carr, $250.
