MHS baseball: Warriors drop four

Sports reporter

It was two completely different sets of doubleheaders this past week for the Marion High School baseball team, but they came with the same result.

The Warriors lost two high-scoring games April 1 at Smoky Valley, 15-14 and 11-1, and two close calls at home to Hillsboro, 6-5 and 6-4.

In the second game of the Smoky Valley doubleheader, the Warriors managed just four hits to go along with the one run.

Senior Logan Richmond knocked in the team's only run with an RBI-double in the first inning, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Brian Fruechting had a double, and Zan Fine was 2-3 with two singles.

Sophomore Wil Case took the loss on the mound, pitching 3 1/3 innings, and Corey Seacat pitched 2/3 thirds of an inning before the Vikings reached the run-rule score of 11-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Vikings scored in every inning, including three in the first and four in the fourth.

In game one, Marion was in on the offensive act, scoring two in the first inning, and led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the third.

Smoky Valley would then score 12 runs over the next three innings to lead 13-7.

Trailing 13-8 into the seventh inning, Marion scored five runs to tie the game.

Calvin Jeffrey, who had relieved Brian Fruechting on the mound to start the fifth, held the Viking scoreless in the seventh to force extra frames.

A run by Marion in the top of the eighth was still not enough, as Smoky Valley scored two in the eighth to win, 15-14.

Jeffrey took the loss on the mound after pitching 3 1/3 innings and yielding six runs.

He struck out three and walked three.

Fruechting went 4 1/3 innings, striking out four and giving up nine runs.

The box score looked better for Marion in the hitting section, as every player recorded at least one hit.

Jeffrey, Fine, Fruechting, and Case each had three, while Case knocked in a team-high four runs.

Jeffrey and Adam Maag each had two RBIs, and Fine, Chase Carlson, and Marshall Ragland each had one.

Case hit a triple for the Warriors who totaled 20 hits.

The losses dropped them to 0-2 on the season. Their record is now 0-4 after two more losses Thursday against Hillsboro.

Hillsboro 6-6, Marion 5-4

Despite scoring six of their eight runs in the two doubleheaders Thursday in the final innings, the Warriors came up just short in two games against Hillsboro.

The Warriors pitching was improved from the Smoky Valley match-up, but a case of too little, too late doomed them in both games.

It was a good start for Marion in game one as the team got a RBI-double from Fruechting and a sac fly from Case in the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead.

Fruechting held the Trojans scoreless in the first two innings, but ran into some trouble in the third.

The Trojans put up three against him in that inning, and three more against Ragland in the fourth.

Ragland would settle down and not allow another run over the next three innings, but Isaac Leihy of Hillsboro was doing the same thing.

After giving up just two runs in the first 6 1/3 innings, Leihy recorded just one out in the seventh before being pulled in favor of closer Daniel Jost.

Matt Sprowls led off the inning with a walk, and the Warriors kept getting on base.

RBI-hits from Fruechting and Case cut the lead to 6-5, and the Warriors had a runner on second.

But Jost did his job, striking out the final two batters to record the save and a victory for the Trojans.

Fine and Fruechting had three hits for Marion, while Jeffrey Richmond, Case, and Sprowls each had one.

Fruechting and Case had all five RBIs with three and two respectively.

Game two was a pitcher dual between Jacob Edwards of Hillsboro and Seacat of Marion.

MHS held a 1-0 lead heading into the fifth inning before the Trojans put two across the board against the freshman.

Jeffrey would relieve Seacat in the sixth after he gave up another run, and Jeffrey would pitch two scoreless innings before yielding three runs in the top of the seventh.

The Trojans now led 6-1 as the teams headed into the final inning of the night.

RBIs from Fine and Richmond cut the gap to 6-4, but Jost once again closed the door to record his second save during the night.

Case added two more hits in the game along with Richmond, while Jeffrey and centerfielder Isaac Hett each had one.

The Warriors were in action Tuesday at Haven, and will be at home Friday against Nickerson.
