MHS class of 1939 observes 65th anniversary years ago

Fourteen members of Marion High School class of 1939 met on Old Settlers' Day for their 65th annual reunion.

Committee members were the Rev. Henry Murray, Peggy Thies, Ruth Jo Penner, Janet Keazer, and Lois Patton.

The group gathered at 9 a.m. at McGillicuddy's Restaurant for fruit and nut breads made by classmates Lois Patton, Janet Keazer, Peggy Thies, Dwight Allen's wife, and Helen Murray.

They decorated a trolley provided by Jim Donahue and 14 class members rode through the parade.

After the parade class members and their guests enjoyed a special lunch at McGillicuddy's followed by a short program.

The Rev. Henry Murray was master of ceremonies and Peggy (Razor) Thies was mistress of ceremonies. Everyone enjoyed looking at Thies' "MHS Book of Memories." She also made a book of the highlights of the past nine celebrations for each class member. Murray compiled a book for each member reporting nostalgic news. He also presented each class member with roadrunner clips made in his woodworking shop.

The Rev. Walt Weber assisted Murray in reading the names of the 28 deceased members of the class. Ruth Jo Penner played hymns on the piano.

The group met at Central Park for the afternoon program and the recognition of classes.

Those attending the day's festivities were Jim and Viola Grubb of Gulfport, Miss., their daughters, Mary Potzmann of Columbia, Mo., and Beverly Jensen of Kansas City, Mo.; Virginia (Heidel) Young of Scottsdale, Ariz., and her daughter, Janet Kucharik of Salem, Ore.; Dr. Burhl Miesse and Mary of Collierville, Tenn.

Helen (Seigert) and Loren Post of Bella Vista, Ark.; Lois (Keazer) Patton of Topeka and her daughter, Carol of Olathe; Peggy Beryl (Razor) Thies and friends Glenn and Donna Ayre of Salina; the Rev. Walt and Dorothy Weber of Abilene.

Ruth (Macon) Goentzel and her daughter, Virginia Jost, both of Valley Center and son Bill Goentzel of Marion; Vera (Penland) Lucas and her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Marieclaude, all of Derby.

Gailen and Jean White of St. George; Almeta (Brown) Vannocker of Emporia and her daughter, Doreen, of Yates Center; the Rev. Henry and Helen Murray of Newton.

Janet (Thye) Keazer and her husband Harold of Marion and daughter, Jeannie Keazer of Concordia; and Ruth Jo (Willming) and Ira Penner of Marion.

Classmates who were unable to attend were Dwight Allen, Annie Jean (Winkley) Lawrence, Clyde Coe, Claudine (Dixon) Hunt, Maxine (Eilerts) Kreutziger, Mary Anna (Goertz) Scharenberg, LeRoy Oblander, Carrol (Phillips) Vogt, Wanita (Razor) Selvy, Bernard Selvy, Emile Soyez, Clella (Schwendiman) Jost, Lucille (Tiemeier) Grove, Erma Grace (Van Buren) Boelman, and Clifford "Chick" Winter.
