MHS cross country has strong showing at Hesston

Warrior cross country runners brought home six individual medals from the Hesston Invitational meet this past Thurday, and finished high up in the team standings as well.

In the girls' event, Danielle Cope continued her leadership of the Lady Warriors with a fourth-place finish, the highest of any Warrior runner. Also medaling were Camille Christensen (11th) and Tacy Taylor (18th).

"Danielle has had strong back-to-back meets," said MHS head coach Bethany Carlson. "She has already improved a whole minute compared to where she was last year."

There were 192 girls from 29 schools competing in the two girls' divisions.

Marion's 33 varsity team points gave them a sixth place finish.

Daniel Goentzel again paced the Warrior boys with the team's fastest overall time and a ninth place finish in his section. Ryan Jones ran to a fifth-place showing and Louis Holt finished the haul of medals for Marion by finishing in 10th place.

As impressive as the Warrior finishes were against the field of 231 boys from 27 schools, an equally bright spot for Marion was having four runners — Goentzel, Jones, Holt, and Michael Kirkpatrick — set personal best times over the 5K course.

The 82 varsity points earned by Warrior runners were good enough for a 10th place team finish.

"We were very pleased with our results," said Carlson. "Both teams placed several places higher than last year."

Marion Middle School harriers will join the Warrior varsity in competition at the Peabody Invitational Thursday afternoon. The first middle school race begins at 3:45 p.m., and high school division races get under way at 5 p.m.
