MHS debaters compete in novice tournament
Marion High School novice debate teams participated Saturday in the 2005 Sunflower Novice Championship Tournament at Blue Valley Northwest.
Jon Nesser and Kevin Billbe defeated Saint Thomas Aquinas, Lawrence, and Buhler.
Nesser was the No. 1 speaker in three rounds and Billbe was the No. 2 speaker in one round. They missed breaking for finals by one round against Wichita Independent. They placed 17th, missing the medals by one round.
Jake Cochran and Zach Helmstead defeated Topeka Seaman. Cochran was the No. 1 speaker in one round. Helmstead was the No. 2 speaker in two rounds.
"Both teams debated well and this tournament is the state novice tournament for Kansas," said coach Mary Griffith.
Former Marion High School debater James Meier and his wife Andrea, served as MHS judges.
