MHS golfers swing into action with succussful opening week

Sports reporter

The first week of the 2005 golf season for Marion High School proved to be a good one.

Although rain shortened their opening meet at Herington April 5, the Warriors played well in the nine-hole event.

Leading the way was senior Nick Carlson, who shot a 36 and took home the first place medal.

"I expect that of him," said head coach Doug Dick.

Nick's cousin, freshman Chase Carlson, took home a medal as well. He finished 10th with a round of 42.

In the two-man team scores MHS finished tied for first with Peabody, but was awarded the title because of an individual-low tie-break score.

Nick Carlson teamed up with sophomore Travis Hett to shoot a combined 79.

Hett just missed out on a medal with a round of 43, finishing 11th.

The Warriors fared well in the four-man team scores, finishing fourth out of 12 teams.

Chase Carlson (42), Keith Jones (46), Jake Bredemeier (47), and John Whitwell (48), made up the four-man squad.

The six golfers combined to finish second with a combined score of 262, eight strokes behind champion Wichita Trinity.

"I was extremely pleased," Dick said. "I had high hopes for the meet."

The Warriors traveled Friday to Hillsboro, and continued to shoot well.

Hett was Marion's top golfer, finishing second with an 18-hole round of 78.

"He showed some progress," Dick said. "It was good to see him play better."

Hett and Nick Carlson teamed up again to take first in the two-man team with a combined score of 163. Carlson's 85 gave him a 10th-place medal.

The four-man team of Jones (88), Whitwell (89), Bredemeier (95), and Chase Carlson (98) just missed a medal by one stroke, finishing fourth with a combined 370.

"I'm excited our young guys played well," Dick said. "I'm especially proud of Keith [Jones]. An 88 on his first 18 holes of varsity is great."

With 11 teams at the event Marion finished third as a team, with a score 533. Hillsboro won their home tournament and Chapman took second.

"It was a great tournament for us," Dick said. "But it pointed out some weaknesses."

Dick said the Warriors struggled on both the green and with their short games, something they will work on this week in practice.

Dick thinks they may not even get on the course this week, instead just work on short and long iron swings, as well as putting.

The Warriors will head Friday to Wichita for the Collegiate Invitational, and Monday they will travel to Council Grove for a meet.

Nickerson Invitational

On Monday Hett played well for MHS, taking 10th place on the Highlands course in Hutchinson. His round of 87 earned him the final medal in the 72-man tournament.
