MHS on track after blazing start

Sports reporter

On a day windy enough to rival the storm in "The Wizard of Oz," Marion High School played host Friday to its first track meet of the season.

Erin Carr and Jeremy Vondenkamp led their respective teams to top-six finishes.

"We were very pleased with how we competed on a tough day for track and field," Warrior head coach Grant Thierolf said.

Carr finished first in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and took third in the triple jump.

As a team the Warrior girls finished sixth out of 12.

"Erin had a great day and it showed she has progressed as a sprinter and a competitor," Theirolf said.

Toni Gordon and Emalee Versch racked up points for MHS in the throwing events. Versch earned third place honors in the shot put, and sixth in the javelin, while Gordon won the discus event with a toss of 102 feet, two-and-one-half inches.

"We were pleased with them," Thierolf said of his throwers.

The coaching staff also though the distance runners performed well.

Running in her first home high school track meet, freshman Camille Christensen placed fifth in the 800m run and sixth in the 1600m run.

2005 state-qualifier Danielle Cope took fourth in the 3200m run, and was part of the 4x800m relay with Christensen, Katie Hett, and Amanda Richmond that took fourth.

The boys' team racked up 74.33 points and took third at the 12-team event.

The Warrior's lone state-placer from a year ago, Jeremy Vondenkamp, won the 300m hurdles race and took third in the 110m hurdles.

Gavin Moore, running in his first home meet after taking a year off, placed fourth in the 1600m run, and sixth in the 3200m run.

Throwers Adam Depler, Shawn Britton, and Michael Brookens earned points for the Warriors in shot put, javelin, and discus.

"Overall we were very pleased with how the meet went," Thierolf said. "We will have to progress through the season and just keep getting better meet by meet, and we should be very happy by the end of the season."

Centre Quint

Both Warrior teams took first place April 4 at the Centre Quint.

The five-team event included Goessel, Moundridge, Centre, and Wichita Independent.

Kyle Hett and Vondenkamp were the top Warrior placers, taking first in two events each. Justin Heidebrecht, Moore, Jason Hett, and Depler all placed first in one event.

Kimber Hardey earned her first, first-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 33 feet. Kalaya Jackson, 100m dash, and Christensen, 1600m run, took first place in running events as well.

The Warriors ran Tuesday at the Hillsboro CKTL, and will hit the track again Friday at Smoky Valley.
