MHS scholars take first at Sterling

The Marion High School team of Isaac Guetersloh, Lee Ownbey, Brett Billings, Jessica Vogel, and Matt Thierolf took first place Thursday at the varsity scholars' bowl meet at Sterling.

In preliminary pool play, Marion defeated Trinity Catholic, 100-15, Burrton, 60-15, Hesston, 70-10, and Little River 50-10. Marion lost to Russell 50-40.

Marion advanced to semifinal action as a wild-card, and defeated Smoky Valley 60-30.

Marion faced off against Halstead in the final match, surviving six tie-breakers to claim a 60-50 victory.

The top three scorers for Marion were Guetersloh, Thierolf, and Billings with 140, 130, and 120 points respectively. Ownbey tallied an additional 60 points.

MHS scholars' bowl coach Doug Vogel reports the next varsity competitions are Dec. 16 at Centre High School, Jan. 4 at Southeast of Saline, and Jan. 6 at Council Grove.
