MHS scholars take first round at Moundridge

The Marion High School varsity Scholars' Bowl team competed in two meets this past week.

The team of juniors Matt Thierolf and Joe Norris, sophomore Eric Vogel, and freshmen Dane Purkeypile and E. J. Obermeyer, posted a 2-3 record Nov. 6 at the Wichita Collegiate Invitational in the preliminary round.

Marion lost to Kapaun Mount Carmel, Andover Central, and Wichita West and defeated Wichita North and Smoky Valley.

Thierolf led the Warrior scoring with 110 points, followed by Vogel with 40, and Purkeypile with 35.

Two evenings later Thierolf and Purkeypile were joined by sophomore Sam Ehrlich to compete in the Moundridge High School Invitational.

The evening started with preliminary play in which Marion, fielding only a three-member team, defeated Sedgwick 40-20, Hesston 80-25, and Nickerson 40-30.

The team then fell to Hutchinson Trinity on a tie-breaker 60-50, and Inman 30-20.

This left Marion in a three-way tie for second place in the pool.

Total points gave MHS second in the pool and they advanced to the quarter-finals where the Warriors defeated Halstead 40-30.

In the semi-finals MHS defeated Hillsboro 30-20 before going on to take first place by defeating previously undefeated Remington, 70-60.

Thierolf led the scoring with 290 points followed by Ehrlich with 60 and Purkeypile with 20.

"The first two weeks of the season are always a challenge since many of the team members are involved in the musical which is in the last weeks of rehearsal," coach Doug Vogel said. "We will play short-handed again this week at the Flinthills High School Invitational before being joined by our captain, senior Brett Billings, and others for a meet at Hesston the last week in November. But being short-handed doesn't seem to be a problem for this group this year."

The freshman/sophomore squad will travel Monday to compete at Remington.
