MHS Singers to perform Saturday at KMEA festival

Marion High School will send three students and its 19 MHS Singers Saturday to the 2006 Kansas Musical Educators Association festival in Wichita.

The three students performing in the all-state choir, Michael Brookens, Rachel Davidson, and Jordan Timm, also are part of MHS Singers.

The Singers will perform at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Century II in the Mary Jane Teall Theatre.

"It's the largest music show in the state," MHS music teacher Kevin Moler said.

While the Singers will not be judged, they will receive an award for being selected.

MHS sent in a blind audition tape of last year's group, and was one of three high schools chosen, with the other two being 6A schools.

More than 5,000 people will attend the weekend event, that includes schools of all grades from every corner of the state.

While Davidson, Brookens, and Timm will be competing for judges in the choir, the singers' group will be entertaining and building their resumes.

"There will be music educators of all kinds there," Moler said.

When Moler found out his group was selected he was excited, but a little nervous.

"I thought, 'Oh gosh, what have I done because we have so much work to do,'" he said.

The Singers practiced every day at school, and Moler had them meet each Sunday night since the second semester started.

It will be the second time in five years the Singers from Marion have been chosen for the festival that does not allow groups to attend two years in a row.

"MHS has always had a good history of fine arts," Moler said. "This is basically to show off what you got."
