MHS to host fifth annual state power lifting competition Saturday

For the fifth year in a row Marion High School will host the 3A state powerlifting competition at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the MHS gym.

MHS football and track coach Grant Thierolf will run the event, and looks for this year to be better than ever.

"It's a great event," he said. "We're hoping for 250-350 athletes from across the state."

The competition is open to all 3A schools in the state, and Thierolf said many will take advantage of the opportunity.

"There will be some kids lifting enormous amounts of weight," he said. "We will see some of the strongest athletes in Kansas."

Around 30 athletes from MHS will compete, and volunteer judges from around Marion will help Thierolf make the program run smoothly. For the first time ever there will be an announcer.

Other volunteers help make pancakes for the lifters, and Thierolf said their help along with judges and every custodian who helps get the gym ready for use is greatly appreciated.

"It really is a whole school effort," he said.

The event is free and open to anyone.

"It's a chance to showcase what Marion has to offer," Thierolf said.

The event will run from 9:30 until around 2:30 or 3 p.m.
