MHS Warriors finish eighth in MCAA pre-season tourney

Sports reporter

It wasn't a perfect day, but it wasn't a bad one either.

In its first taste of Mid-Central Activities Association play during the MCAA pre-season tournament, Marion got off to a great start.

The Warriors won their pool on Saturday with victories against Hoisington and Smoky Valley.

Both matches featured great comebacks from the Warriors. After defeating Hoisington in game one, Marion trailed 20-13 late in game two. A 12-3 run, led by junior Toni Gordon, gave the Warriors a 25-23 victory, and a 2-0 defeat of the number four seed.

After losing the first game to Smoky Valley 25-22, Marion came out spiking. A 25-15 game-two victory forced a deciding game three.

In a back in forth game that featured 11 ties, the Warriors scored the last two points to claim victory, 25-23.

Junior Megan Hudson sealed the victory with a kill and a service ace to end the match.

She recorded 12 kills in the five pool-play games.

However, once the tournament moved to Hillsboro, the Warriors lost their next three matches to Wichita Collegiate, Hillsboro, and Sterling 2-0. They finished eighth in the 12-team tournament.

Whether it was fatigue, or just being outplayed, the afternoon turned a sweet morning sour.

Tuesday could bring payback for some Marion opponents. Sterling, Collegiate, and Nickerson will come to Marion High School to compete in a quad. The Warriors will have a second chance at Sterling and Collegiate after losing to both of them in the tournament.
