Michael Brookens recognized for community volunteer efforts

Marion High School senior Michael Brookens was officially presented an engraved bronze medallion today (Wednesday) to signify his selection as a distinguished finalist in the 2006 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

The program honors outstanding youth volunteers.

Brookens is being honored for assisting to re-establish a summer theater program for youth by serving as co-director of a full-length student musical production. During a four-week period, Brookens conducted auditions, recruited an accompanist and technical crew, designed choreography, led rehearsals, applied stage makeup, and provided an offstage "ghostly" voice during the performance.

All middle and high schools in the U.S., Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, Red Cross chapters, YMCAs, and volunteer centers were eligible last November to select a student or member for a local award. Local honorees then were reviewed by state-level judges who selected two state honorees and distinguished finalists based on criteria such as personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact, and personal growth.

Brookens is the son of Bob and Anita Brookens of Marion.
