MMS boys impressive against Hesston

Marion Middle School boys' basketball teams took two of three games Thursday from Hesston on their home court.

The B-team started off the night with a close victory, 38-37.

Despite not making a field goal in the final quarter, the Wildcats' eight free throws sealed the victory.

A three-pointer at the buzzer by Hesston made the score closer than the game indicated.

Jordan Hett was the leading-scorer for the Wildcats with 16 points. Jacob Harper and Austin Pedersen each had eight for 6-0 MMS.

Leading by 10 at the half, the Wildcats actually trailed in the third quarter, but fought back to lead by four heading into the fourth.

A-team coach Kelly Robson was impressed with the victory considering the team had a short bench due to foul trouble and illness.

"They kept their record perfect with a hard-fought victory," Robson said.

The C-team had the other victory for the Wildcats, defeating Hesston 28-19. Even though they were down three after the first quarter the Wildcats led by five at the half, and held on to win. They are now 3-1 on the season.

"As they have for most of the season, the C-team played a nice floor game to come away with the victory," Robson said.

The coach was impressed with Eric Regnier and Zac Hammond on the defensive side of the ball, and he said Andrew Schafer continued to improve his inside game.

Regnier led all scorers with 12 points, and Schaefer had six.

The A-team fell to 2-4 after losing to a talented Hesston squad, 50-24.

The Wildcats trailed just 11-8 after one quarter, but two Hesston players took over, scoring 39 of the team's 50 points, en route to the victory.

Colten Johnson had eight points, and Scott Jones had six.

The teams play Thursday against Halstead at home.
