MMS boys win over Ellinwood

The Marion Middle School Wildcat boys' basketball teams hosted Ellinwood Thursday at Marion Elementary School, and sent the Eagles home winless.

Matt Sprowls took the opening tap of the A-team game and drove for a Wildcat layup, giving Marion a lead it never relinquished. The Wildcats used full-court pressure and tenacious defense on the way to a 35-20 victory.

Seven players broke into the scoring column for the Wildcats, topped by Dillon Richmond with eight. Landon Leiker and Les Riggs keyed a strong team rebounding effort, according to MMS head coach Kelly Robson.

The Wildcat B-team had an equally impressive effort in its 31-13 win. Scott Jones led all scorers with 16 points, and led the Wildcats in steals. Robson highlighted the passing of David Helmer as a major contributor to Marion's offensive output.

Marion completed a three-game sweep of the Eagles with a 14-3 win in the C-team game, shortened to two quarters. Cole Lewman's six first-quarter points opened up a comfortable lead for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats hosted Reno Valley Monday at Marion High School Gymnasium, with the visitors taking two of three games.

Turnovers and missed free throws hampered the Wildcats in the A-team game, which Reno Valley won 38-21. Sprowls scored seven points for Marion, and Jordan Versch chipped in six.

Scott Jones and David Helmer each scored eight points to help the Wildcats turn the tables on Reno Valley in the B-team game, won by Marion 29-22.

Reno Valley used strong defensive pressure in the C-team game to rattle Wildcat ball handlers into committing multiple turnovers, on the way to a convincing 28-8 win. Colin Eurit tallied four points for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats see action again Nov. 30, when they travel to Wichita for a 4:30 p.m. start against Collegiate.
