MMS girls finish season with second place finish

In a format that broke the 12 Mid-Central Activities Association into three "pods" for the league tournament didn't look good for Marion Middle School.

The Wildcats were matched up with three teams (Hillsboro, Lindsborg, and Hesston) who had defeated them in the regular season.

However, MMS got revenge on two of the three teams and claimed second place in the tournament.

Marion matched up with Lindsborg for its first game Feb. 4 and defeated the Vikings, 35-30. MMS built a 9-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

Lindsay Hett scored 16 points to lead the way for the Wildcats. Julia Zeiner scored six points, Kayley Heerey four, Kristen Geis three, Emali Kelsey and Shelby Purcell two, and Kristen Steinborn one.

The second game of the day wasn't what Marion had in mind, as it fell to Hillsboro, 51-15.

After playing the Trojans tough at the end of the season, the Wildcats were playing catch-up all game after trailing 32-12 at halftime.

Zeiner scored six points again, leading the team. Steinborn chipped in with three points, and Hett, Heerey, and Bridget Lundy each had two points.

The round-robin tournament resumed Feb. 4, and the Wildcats needed a victory for second place.

Marion was matched up with Hesston, determined to avenge an earlier loss to the Swathers.

It didn't take long to realize that would happen, once the Wildcats took a 12-2 lead after the first quarter.

The lead grew to 18-7 at halftime, and finally turned into a 42-22 victory for Marion.

Heerey and Emily Meador scored nearly half the team's points with 10 each.

Kelsey scored eight points, Zeiner six, while Lundy, Hett, and Meador each chipped in with two points.
