MMS girls lose three to Hesston

While Marion Middle School girls' A-team came out on the short end Thursday of a 39-25 battle against Hesston, it wasn't due to lack of effort.

"This was the hardest-played game by these girls this year," praised MMS head coach Autumn Priddy.

"They gave me everything they had — I couldn't have asked for more effort," she said.

The Lady Wildcats were hampered by a slow start, only scoring two points in the first quarter, as Hesston built a 10-2 lead.

Scoring improved for Marion in the second quarter, but it did so for Hesston as well, as the Lady Wildcats saw their deficit increase to 23-10.

Marion held its own in the second half, matching Hesston almost point for point, but could not come up with a run to threaten the Hesston lead.

Kayla Willaims was the leading Lady Wildcat scorer with six points, and Jordan Harper tallied four.

Priddy indicated the loss was attributable largely to defensive shortcomings.

"We have to learn to play defense with our feet, and stop reaching," she said. The Lady Wildcat B-team had its own scoring difficulties, managing only two points in each of the first, second, and fourth quarters.

Still, with a 10-point outburst in the third, Marion found itself down only three points, 17-14, entering the final stanza. Hesston's 12-2 run quashed any hopes the Lady Wildcats had of overtaking the visiting team.

The trio of Macy Hess, Whitney Gordon, and Kathy Goering scored four points each for the Lady Wildcats.

Hesston ran away with the C-team contest, 42-9.

Taylor Harms, Jessie Taylor, Ashley Garth, and Megan Overton each scored two points for Marion.
