MMS takes third at league volleyball tournament

Marion Middle School Wildcats volleyball team won its first two matches Saturday to reach the semi-finals of the Mid-Central Activities Association tournament at Lindsborg.

The Wildcats came out flat according to coach Shannon Cooper and lost the first game of the first match against Halstead 25-21.

The team bounced back in games two and three winning 25-19, 25-9.

Leading servers for MMS were Julia Zeiner with 13, and Lindsay Hett and Kristen Steinborn with 11 each.

In the second round MMS defeated Lindsborg with the help of the crowd Cooper said, 25-20, 25-22.

"They were very scrappy and dug everything Lindsborg sent at them," Cooper said.

Steinborn and Emma Hett had 10 serves each, and Lindsay Hett had eight.

The Wildcats came out hot in the semi-final match against Collegiate, winning the first game 25-12. However, they dropped the next two games 25-23, 25-18.

"This was a hard loss for the girls," Cooper said.

MMS bounced back with a victory against Lindsborg for a third-place finish.

In the end Cooper was happy.

"The girls preserved and played their hearts out," she said.

Steinborn had 14 serves and Sarah Freeby 13.

Hesston

In the final match before the league tournament, the Wildcats took three of four from the Hesston Swathers.

The eighth grade varsity team won 25-16, 25-13 to finish the season 5-2.
