MMS Wildcats have rough outing against Hesston

The Marion Middle School boys' basketball teams hobbled home Thursday from Hesston, smarting from three blowout losses.

A solitary free throw in the second quarter was the only point the Wildcat A-team scored in its lowest-scoring half of the season.

Hesston, meanwhile, had no scoring problems, racking up leads of 20-0 after the first quarter, and 32-1 at halftime. Hesston won the game 49-11.

"Too many turnovers that led to layups cost us dearly right from the start," lamented MMS head coach Kelly Robson.

The third quarter was Marion's lone highlight of the contest, as the Wildcats thawed a bit from the field, tallying eight points. Dillon Richmond scored five for the Wildcats.

"We couldn't handle Hesston's speed and athleticism," Robson said. "We were outrebounded and outworked most of the evening."

The Wildcat B-team barely fared better in a 39-19 loss.

Held scoreless in the first quarter, Marion trailed 27-4 at halftime.

The Wildcats outscored Hesston 15-12 in the second half, with David Helmer scoring six points, and Colten Johnson and Scott Jones hitting five each.

"Our lack of intensity showed most in the rebounding department. Hesston repeatedly got second and third attempts at the basket," Robson said.

The C-team's 39-13 loss had Marion riding a scoring roller coaster, with good output in the first and third quarters, but only two points in the second, and no points in the final quarter.

"The C-team managed the best effort of the long evening," Robson said. "We stayed in a fairly close battle for most of the game."

Colin Eurit led Wildcat scorers with six points. Tim Costello added four.
