MMS wins one against Hillsboro

Marion Middle School Wildcats volleyball team had a tough night Thursday against the Hillsboro Trojans.

The seventh grade team started the night with two close losses to HMS, 25-20 and 25-21, to even its record at 1-1.

Head coach Shannon Cooper called the loss disappointing, but expects to see the girls working hard this week.

The eighth grade team lost as well, this time in three games. The Wildcats took the first one 25-19, but dropped the next two, 25-8 and 25-20.

Despite the loss, Cooper was upbeat.

"This was the best I have seen these girls play over the past two years," she said. "We hope to have a rematch during our tournament."

The eighth grade mixed team picked up a victory for

HMS, winning in three games, 13-25, 25-13, and 25-17.

Cooper was proud of the girls comeback to even their record at 1-1.

Finally, the seventh grade mixed team lost in three games, 15-25, 25-20, and 21-25.

Cooper said the girls were excited but also nervous with it being their first time playing together as a team.

"They did an excellent job of coming back after a rocky start," Cooper said.

Ashley Ratzloff recorded 14 good serves and Alex Cain had seven to lead the seventh graders.

On the eighth grade side, Emma Hett led with 16 serves, and Danae Edwards recorded 12.

MMS will play Lindsborg at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at home.
