Mold reported, KDHE inspects special ed building

Mold in one of the Marion County Special Education Cooperative buildings was anonymously reported to Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

County special education director Chris Cezar reported Monday to the board that a state inspector took samples Friday from a utility closet in the CLASS building. The inspector also took atmospheric readings in all of the buildings on the grounds.

Cezar assured the board that the matter was taken seriously and was being addressed.

In other business:

— The board discussed letters that were sent by consultant Kent Stewart to city officials regarding possible sites for the cooperative.

— Positions that remain opened are an occupational therapist at Hillsboro, a teacher at Marion High School, and a speech therapist.

— The budget for 2007-08 was approved as presented.

— A contract was approved where the Marion County cooperative provides services to Rice County Special Services Cooperative. During the 2006-07 school year, approximately $21,000 was paid to the district for the services.

— The county cooperative also will provide services to the visually impaired at Harvey County Special Education Cooperative for approximately two days per week and Haysville USD 261 for 15 days per year. The cost is dependent on actual use and costs but will be approximately $9,000 from HCSEC and $2,000 from Haysville.

— Classified staff appointments were Carol Dick, Sharon Toews, Tammy Newfield, Chelse Brunner, Cecilia La Plante, Donya Anderson, Lee Dalrymple, Lanissa Hammond, Tammy McKinnis, and Courtney La Plante.

Certified staff appointments were Kaylene Mueller, Matt Zieammermann, Kristen Mefford, Michelle Porter, and Bonnie Farrell-Beckloff.

Classified staff resignations that were accepted were from Rachelle Pohlman, Karen Konarik, Shawn Strunk, Jeanne Strotkamp, Melissa Kruse, Kaylene Mueller, and Dawn Kaiser.

— Board members took a tour of the facilities.

— Executive sessions were held to discuss personnel issues and acquisition of property issues. No actions were taken on either issue.

— A section of board policies was reviewed.

The next regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 at the cooperative administration building at Florence.
