Moran reappoints Schwartz to board

Congressman Jerry Moran recently re-appointed Richard Schwartz of Marion to serve on the First District Service Academy Selection Board.

As part of the 16-member board, Schwartz will review applications and interview candidates who apply for admission to U.S. Service Academies that include the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

"Richard has an accomplished military career," Moran said. "He knows what it takes to succeed in the armed services. I am pleased to have his assistance again this yea on the board."

After earning degrees from Ottawa University and the University of Southern California, Schwartz served on active duty as an infantry company commander for the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. A graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, Schwartz served as chief of ground operations of the U.S. Central Command, as a staff officer for the Department of Defense, and as the Chief of Staff of the Fourth Marine Division. He retired in 1989, after 30 years of service at the rank of colonel.

The selection board will interview candidates Oct. 6, at the Eisenhower Presidential Library Building at Abilene. Following the interviews, the board will make recommendations to Moran.
