Moran to recognize Ramona Nov. 25 years ago

Congressman Jerry Moran recently announced he will recognize the citizens of Ramona at 10 a.m. Nov. 25, for successful community revitalization efforts with his "Building Better Communities" award.

Ramona, population 100, re-established its roots by rebuilding community landmarks.

Between 1990 and 2000, Moran said sisters Pat Wick and Jessica Gilbert renovated three houses — their home, a bed and breakfast, and a lodge. A museum also was opened.

Ramona now hosts a spring tea party, a citywide Memorial Day service, a Main Street Fourth of July parade, and a festival of lights and outdoor nativity at Christmas. Ramona and other area communities recently completed a scarecrow parade to celebrate Halloween and promote regional tourism.

"Citizens in Ramona are working together to enhance the quality of life in their community," Moran said. "Their ongoing efforts to revitalize Ramona are an example of how hard work and vision can create such an opportunity."

The recognition ceremony will be held at the Barbershop Gallery, 207 D. Street, Ramona, which will celebrate its grand opening. A reception will follow.
