More railroad signals to be installed in county

Four crossing signals with crossbars and lights will be installed in Marion County by Burlington Northern Railroad.

County road and bridge superintendent Jim Herzet reported Monday to Marion County Commission the signals will be located at Pawnee and 60th, Mustang and 50th, Alfalfa south of U.S.-50, and Bluestem south of U.S.-50.

The county will maintain the warning signs and federal funds will foot the bill for the signals.

— New insulated shop doors were approved by the commission. The doors are for the county road and bridge shop and a door for the county noxious weed department, both located on South Coble Street, Marion.

Eldon Door Company was awarded the bid of $6,300 for all doors.

— The commission authorized Herzet to sign construction contracts.

— Herzet advised the commission he had chosen two bridges for replacement in 2006. A 60-foot bridge will be constructed on Clover and 240th, and a 45-foot bridge on Indigo and 250th.

The commission authorized Herzet to obtain bids for materials.

Commissioner Randy Dallke asked Herzet to evaluate a bridge near Florence. Dallke said he has had complaints from farmers who cannot utilize it because it's too narrow. Herzet said a boxed culvert may be used but will check the situation.
