Mother, son keep coffee drinkers happy at Lincolnville

Barbara Mahone is providing a small corner of her residence in Lincolnville as a meeting place for the local coffee drinkers.

"It's just a gathering place for friends," she said.

She noted that after The Chipped Cup café closed for good, local residents were desperate for such a place.

Mahone's residence is the historic former Tiemeier's Store which she is in the process of converting into a home.

For the coffee crowd, she put up a wall frame covered with decorative broadcloth at one corner of the building just inside the front door and placed a couple of dining tables in front of it.

The informal coffee shop is open from 7-11 a.m., Monday through Friday. Every morning, Mahone brews a large container of coffee and sets out a few sweet treats such as pastries and muffins. Individuals come in and help themselves, providing a donation to cover the cost.

Mahone is assisted by her son, Mark Jarrett, who recently moved in with her. She said it helps a lot to have him around because he can help her with the remodeling and also can keep the coffee on when she needs to go to Texas and spend time with a sister who is fighting cancer.

The men who comprise the majority of those who utilize the place are appreciative of Mahone's efforts.

If and/or when the café is reopened, her service may no longer be needed. But for now it is an invaluable resource that is essential for every small town.
