Museum receives donations and assistance with projects

Numerous donations were received this past year by Marion Historical Museum.

Museum director Cynthia Blount presented a report Monday to Marion City Commission that included activities of the museum and donations that have been received.

Donated items included a model of Canada school, photo of Marsh arch bridge, World War I photograph, World War I Roll of Honor book, Antelope school treasurer's books, five U.S. Air Force patches, 1963 Marion telephone books, 1902 Marion County land atlas, four Marion baseball trophies, sousaphone, drum from the Rube Band, two slate tiles from the roof of Marion County Courthouse, Big Red One plaque, country club golf embossing dyes, Bowlby Clothing Store receipt book, campaign posters, and numerous other items.

Marion resident Royal Smith donated two sections of shelves. Other shelves were installed in memory of former museum curators Phyllis Melton and Lorraine Hadsell.

There were 1,307 museum visitors during the year, an increase of 200 from 2004, said Blount. Of those visitors, there were 727 county residents, 263 out-of-county, 311 out-of-state, and six from other countries.

Total cash income was $764 for the year.

Projects completed included cases in the school room were painted and lights installed, the interior of a tool case was painted, outside steps were patched, and a World War I Marion County Roll of Honor book was indexed.

The Chingawassa rail car was featured in Territorial Magazine. Blount furnished a photograph for the article.

Cash donations were received from Jean Case, LaVerne Hoffman, and Dwight and Helen Beckham.
