Nelson nominated as Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year

Apparently Casey Nelson's 1,153 yards and 20 touchdowns caught someone's eye.

The Marion High School senior has been nominated as an Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year candidate.

The national award is given to one high school football player who went beyond the call of duty, particularly inside opponents' 20-yard line, or the Red Zone.

The award recognizes athletes "who are able to elevate their play and step up when the heat is really on."

The candidate also must embody leadership and set example for teammates on and off the field.

Nelson's off-the-field activities, such as church youth group and Big Brothers/Big Sisters, proved he was more than just a great football player.

His coach, Grant Theirolf, wasn't surprised Nelson was nominated.

"From a player's standpoint, when he would miss a practice because of an academic commitment, it wasn't a very good practice. The other players just trusted him out there," Thierolf said. "He's just a very well-rounded individual," Thierolf said.

If Nelson is not named the player of the year, he still could be noticed as one of the top-50 players of the year. If so he would receive a plaque and other awards.
