New items offered at Art in the Park

A number of new artists from several states will make an appearance this year during Marion's 26th annual Art in the Park and Craft Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 18 in Central Park.

"We already have over 200 vendors and we'll max out with somewhere between 230 and 235 vendor booths," said Margo Yates, executive director with the Marion Chamber of Commerce.

"We have artists coming from as far away as Florida," she said.

New items available at this year's event include tie dye clothing, custom made scrub tops, jackets, and surgical caps for dentists, doctors, and veterinarians, pine needle baskets with nickel trim, lariat rope baskets, felted hats, red hats, and Alpaca fiber products.

"Antler art is not new to this show, but there will be a new twist this year with antler art and lamp working (Italian glass art)," Yates said. "You'll even find cheese for sale."

Not only will there be new items to choose, but many old favorites also will be making a return appearance including limestone and metal art, food products, soaps, candles, baskets, clothing, jewelry, pet items, furniture, and photography.

Recent favorites include cedar flutes, bamboo panpipes and whistles, lighted glass blocks, and unique fabric wound pottery.

Besides the art and crafts, live entertainment this year will be "Michael's Variety Music Show," starring Michael Harber. His repertoire ranges from the "golden oldies" to the mid-1990s.

For the hungry shopper, a large food court will be available offering everything from funnel cakes and homemade cinnamon rolls to barbecue and Mexican food. Other favorites include fresh bierocks, turkey legs, and Reuben sandwiches.

Marion Chamber of Commerce Art in the Park committee will give away 10 $20 certificates at 4 p.m. They may be used at any booth before the close of the show.

A free shuttle bus service will run for customers' convenience during the day. Buses will be departing for Central Park every 15 minutes. Visitors can park at two locations on the west or east edge of town and ride the bus to Central Park. On the west edge, buses will depart from Marion Die and Fixture, 421 W. Main. On the east edge, buses will depart from Marion Baseball Complex on Eisenhower Drive, just off U.S.-56.
