New pool, gym meet requirements of city's plan

In an effort to avoid further back-tracking, Marion City Planning Commission approved the development of a new indoor pool and gymnasium.

When plans were proposed to the former Marion City Commission by USD 408 regarding the new facility, the city's planning commission should have had an opportunity to review and approve the designs as being in compliance with the city's plan but it did not occur.

To prevent any delays and to address issues with the project, the planning commission reviewed the use, location, and the city's comprehensive plan during a special meeting March 6 and determined the building plan and location were within the city's comprehensive plan and zoning regulations.

Planning commission member Jami Williams made the motion and member Angela Lange seconded it, and the motion passed 6-1, with Nick Nickelson abstaining.

Future meetings of the planning commission include discussion and public input regarding updating of the comprehensive plan.

Chairman Roger Schwab said he wanted a do-able plan.

Planning commission member Darvin Markley suggested planning consultant David Yearout be contacted to provide information to and training for the board. More information will be obtained and presented at a future meeting.

The next commission meeting is at 7 p.m. April 4.
