New Year's Eve holiday for county is clarified

Staff reporter

It was clarified at Friday's Marion County Commission meeting that the commission approved the additional four hours of holiday time off Dec. 31 for county employees for this year only.

Concerns were expressed by county personnel requesting clarification about the unscheduled time off with pay.

The commission decided that county road and bridge employees who normally work from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. would work from 7 to 11 a.m. Dec. 31.

Following discussion with transfer station manager Rollin Schmidt, it was determined the transfer station will be closed to the public at 1 p.m. New Year's Eve. Haulers will be notified of the early closing time.

Other personnel who have to remain on the job, i.e., sheriff's department and dispatchers, will receive four hours of holiday pay.

Offices at the courthouse will close at 1 p.m. However the courthouse will remain open after that time if the commission still is in session.

Holidays will be approved in December for 2008, and the commission then can decide if it wants to allow additional time off on New Year's Eve.

In other business:

— Acting register of deeds Jo Ottensmeier reported that she had hired Rebecca Wingfield as deputy register of deeds. Wingfield formerly served in the clerk's office.

Ottensmeier also reported that the part-time employee at the deeds office had worked the allotted 1,000 hours for this year and a part-time employee still was needed through the end of the year. So retired register of deeds Faye Makovec will work part-time as needed.

— Sales tax revenue for September was less than the previous year at $44,250 which was a $4,200 decrease.

— The commission approved the renewal of a Class B club license for Marion Country Club.

— Public health administrator Diedre Serene reported that numerous flu shot clinics had been provided around the county. A supply of flu shots remain for those who want to receive a vaccine. Some locations did not request as many vaccinations this year because some physicians had the vaccine earlier than the health department, Serene reported.

— Serene requested and received a five-minute executive session to discuss personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

The next commission meeting is 9 a.m. Monday at the courthouse.
