Officers arrest suspects for drugs, firearms possession

Three men were arrested this past weekend by Marion County Sheriff's officers on drug and alcohol-related charges in two separate traffic stops.

According to undersheriff Randal Brazil, at approximately 9:45 p.m. Friday, sergeant Jeff Soyez and deputy Josh Whitwell stopped a black Nissan automobile with Sedgwick County license plates for driving left of center. The stop was made at U.S.-56 and 250th.

During a road-side investigation, Soyez and Whitwell discovered personal-use marijuana and paraphernalia on the driver.

In the vehicle's trunk area, deputies found a pound of marijuana and receipts with names and dollar amounts that indicated $900 of marijuana had been sold prior to the traffic stop.

Dustin Sharp, 24, Wichita, driver of the vehicle, was arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, no drug tax stamp, contributing alcohol to a minor, and open container.

Evan Sharp, a passenger, was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor and open container.

In a second incident at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, Soyez stopped a semi-tractor trailer for speeding on U.S.-50 at mile marker 294.

During a roadside investigation, Soyez observed the driver possibly attempting to reach for a weapon behind the driver's seat of the semi. Soyez removed the driver from the vehicle and found an unsecured .45 pistol out of the holster directly behind the driver's seat.

Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia also was found in the vehicle.

Christopher S. Smith of Belton, Mo., was arrested for criminal possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and no drug tax stamp.
