Officers investigate a variety of incidents, cases

Someone drove a Komatsu WA250 loader owned by Bergkamp Construction of Wichita in to the Cottonwood River south of 140th on U.S. 77 on July 2. Marion County Sheriff Deputy Duane McCarty reported that water entering fuel tanks and gear boxes caused an estimated $300 damage.

At 12:04 a.m. July 4, William Freeby, 311 Locust, Marion, reported to Marion Police Officer James Parmley that someone had scratched the hood of his car with a key. Parmley stopped a suspect's vehicle west of Marion. The suspect, Kevin Steinborn, 47, of 319 S. Cedar, was charged with DUI, criminal damage to property, and assault.

At 2:40 a.m. July 10, a report of a drunken driver resulted in an arrest. Sheriff Sgt. Jeff Soyez reported that the driver drove left of center on U.S.-56 and North Cedar Street, Marion, and failed a sobriety test.

At 5:40 p.m. July 10, Kenneth Kliewer, 308 N. Washington, Hillsboro, reported to Marion Police Officer Howard Kahler that a license tag had been stolen from his vehicle while it was parked in the 100 block of West Main Street, Marion. The tag was recovered in Burden and returned to the owner. The incident remains under investigation.

Between July 9 and July 11, someone went on a rampage in Goessel. Two windows were broke at Mid-Kansas Cooperative and Supply on K-15; a back door was kicked and opened at Keith's Foods, 216 E. Main Street; and windows in two doors were damaged at Goessel Elementary School, 500 E. Main Street. A laptop computer and case were stolen from the school. A suspect was arrested and the computer was recovered, reported Deputy Larry Starkey. Damages were estimated at $200.

At 8 p.m. July 8, a person went to a residence on Columbus Street, Tampa, to ask whether the resident wanted his yard mowed. The caller had been mowing the yard. The resident accused the caller of stealing and breaking in his house. The caller turned to leave and the resident allegedly kicked the caller in the right hip, reported Deputy Jim Philpott. The resident was charged with battery.

Two juveniles ran away from home in Lincolnville at 11 p.m. July 14. They allegedly took $60 cash and at least two knives from their foster parents. At 11:30 p.m. they allegedly stole a vehicle, drove it through a yard, and to a highway. Two suspects were later found with a knife, and the vehicle was recovered in Topeka.
